Definition

 Companies normally use a repetitive flow

process when the production of a
products requires the same tasks to be
performed in the same sequence. As a
result , the system can be physically
designed so that the tasks are performed
at work station arranged in sequential
order according to the flow of the
product. This spatial arrangement is
called a PRODUCT FOCUSED LAYOUT
because the physical layout of work
station is based on the sequence of tasks
required to make the product.

Characteristics of Process Layouts

 General-purpose equipment is used

 Changeover is rapid
 Material handling equipment is
flexible
 Operators are highly skilled
 Technical supervision is required
 Planning, scheduling and controlling
functions are challenging
 Production time is relatively long
 In-process inventory is relatively high

Types of Product Focus Layout

PRODUCT FOCUS LAYOUT By Group 9

Mass Production System

 It is also called Discreet Unit

Manufacturing
 It combines several raw materials to
produce the end product

PRODUCT FOCUS LAYOUT By Group 9

Process Manufacturing

 It is an extended form of Mass

Production
 Only one raw material is processed to
get the end product i.e. finished
product of one process is used as
raw material in next process
 Very high volume of non discrete,
highly standardized output is
desired
 No variety in output
 E.g. Petroleum refining, heavy

Filling

 Once all the

ingredients have
been mixed and
blended and the
bottles have been
cleaned and
sanitized, every
thing is ready to
start filling.

 This is a surprisingly
complex process
requiring accuracy
at each step.

Capping

 Once filled, bottles are

then capped.

 Coke uses different
caps for different
bottles
 - glass bottles are
topped $with a metal
crown
 - "PET BOTTLES" are
topped with a plastic
screw-top.

Labeling

 Then they move on

for labeling

 A special machine
dispenses labels
from large rollers,
cuts them and
place on the
bottles.

Coding

 The bottle is now

ready to be
coded. Each one
of Coke’s
beverages is
marked with a
special code that
identifies specific
information about
it.

 These codes
identify the date,

Inspection

 Coca-Cola inspects bottles

at many points during
the process.
 With refillable bottles,
 - When they are first
brought into the plant
 - They are washed and
again after they are filled
 - After filling, each plant
sample bottles are
analyzed in its lab to ensure
quality is
 up to standards.

Advantages of Product Focus Layout

 Low total flow time of the product from

the input stage to the output stage
(i.e. higher rates of
output/productivity) due to:
Ø Continuous flow without
intermediate stoppages and
storages;
Ø Repetitive, small, fragmented
jobs learnt to perfection by the
concerned workers; and
Ø Minimum set-up times of
machines.
 Lesser inspection required
