Sixth-Sense
Device

Sight, Hear, Taste, Smell & Touch««The Five Senses..!!

Now here comes the SIXTH-SENSE
WHAT IS SIXTH-SENSE TECHNOLOGY
i ¶Sixth Sense Technology· is a wearable gestural
interface that augments the physical world
around us with digital information and lets us
use natural hand gestures to interact with that
information. It is developed by Mr. Pranav
Mistry who
is the Research assistant/PhD
candidate in MIT University.

i It helps to access the information

present somewhere which helps us
to make right decision about everyday
situations we are coming across.
WHY THIS TECHNOLOGY IS CALLED

i Our five natural senses to perceive information about

it; that information helps us make decisions and
chose the right actions to take.

i But arguably the most useful information that can

help us make the right decision is not naturally
perceivable with our five senses, namely the data,
information and knowledge.

i Although the miniaturization of computing devices

allows us to carry computers in our pockets, keeping
us continually connected to the digital world, there is
no link between our digital devices and our
interactions with the physical world.
CONTINUED«

i So this Technical Sense bridges this gap,

bringing intangible, digital information out into
the tangible world, and allowing us to interact
with this information via natural hand gestures.
That·s why this technology is called Sixth sense.

i But the ¶Sixth-Sense· frees information from its

confines by seamlessly integrating it with reality,
and thus making the entire world your computer.
THE BASIC PROTOTYPE
THE BASIC COMPONENTS

i DigitalCamera
i Smart Phone
i Projector
i Colored Capes
i Mirror
i Surface (Paper, Wall or anything
which you can use for Projection)
COLOR-MARKERS

D It is at the tip of user·s fingers.

D Marking the user·s fingers with red, yellow, green
and blue tape helps the smartphone app to
recognize gestures via camera.
D The movements and arrangements of these
markers and interpreted into gestures that act as
interaction instruction for the projected application
interfaces.
CAMERA

o Captures an object in view and Tracks the

user·s hand gestures.
o It Sends the data to Smart Phone.
o It acts as Digital eye, Connecting you to
the world of Digital information.
SMART PHONE

D A Web-enabled Smart Phone in the user·s pocket

process the video data
D Other Software searches the Web and interprets
the hand gesture.
D This processed data send to projector in the form
of video.
PROJECTOR

D The projector projects visual information enabling

surfaces and physical objects to be used as interface.
D The projector itself contains a battery inside, with 3
hours of battery life.
D A tiny LED projector displays data sent from the
smart phone on any surface in view-object, wall, or
person.
WORKING
i The hardware that makes Sixth Sense work is a pendant like mobile
wearable interface.

i It has a camera, a mirror and a projector and is connected wirelessly

to a Bluetooth smartphone that can slip comfortably into one·s pocket.

i The Camera recognizes individuals, images, pictures, gestures one

makes with their hands

i Information is sent to the Smartphone for processing

i The downward-facing projector projects the output image on the

mirror

i Mirror reflects image on the desired surface

i Thus the Digital information is feed from its confines and placed in
the physical world.

APPLICATION

Wanna know what is the time,

just make a circle in your wrist
and u can see the watch like a
wrist watch.
WHY A SIXTH-SENSE
TECHNOLOGY?
i Portable

i Support multi-touch and multi user

interaction
i Connectedness between world and
information
i Cost effective

i Data access directly from machine in real

time
i Mind map the idea anywhere

i Its open Source

COST OF SIXTH SENSE
i $350 dollars only

i The interesting thing here is that Sixth Sense

can never really be more expensive than its
individual components
FUTURE IMPLICATIONS
i Studentscould become too wired«and the
element of collaboration I envision might
be completely erased by how the
individual interacts.

i Availability of inappropriate information(

how does this differ from current
computer labs?.....the information is
literally at students· fingerprints.)
CONCLUSION

1. Sixth-Sense recognizes object around us, displaying

information automatically and letting us to access it
any way we need.

2. The Sixth-Sense prototype implements several

application that demonstrate the usefulness,
viability and flexibility of the system.

3. Allowing us to interact with the information via

natural hand gesture.

4. You can carry your Digital world with you, where

ever you go. You can use any surface around you as
an INTERFACE.
