Previous Lesson

1. Pressure
What is Pressure??
• Pressure is defined as force per unit
area
• P= F
A
2. Pressure in liquids
• P = hρg
Try This!!!
Push the ball into the water.
What do you feel???
Learning Outcomes:
At the end of this lesson, you should be able to:
• Explain Buoyant Force
• Relate buoyant force to the weight of the fluid
displaced
• State Archimedes’ Principle
• Describe applications of Archimedes’ principle
• Solve problems involving Archimedes principle
Why it does not sink?

What happen to the ball?

What happen if we press the ball into the water

and then release it?

What are the forces acting on the floating ball?

Today’s Activities:
1. Class activity – to investigate the relationship
between the buoyant force and weight of
fluid displaced.

2. Group discussion on Archimedes Principle’s

application.
What is Buoyant
Force??
Buoyant Force is….
An upward force resulting from an
object being wholly or partially
immersed in a fluid.
The bouyant force is equal to the apparent loss in
weight

Bouyant force = actual weight – apparent weight

The object displaces a volume of water. The bigger

the volume of the object immersed, the bigger the
volume of the liquid displaced.

Volume of liquid displaced = volume of the

submerged part of the object
What is the relationship between the buoyant
force and the weight of fluid displaced??

ARCHIMEDES PRINCIPLE…
State that,
when an object is wholly or partially
immersed in a fluid, it experiences a buoyant
force equal to the weight of fluid displaced.
Bouyant force, FB

W > FB
Object sinks or moves down to the fluid

W < FB
Object rises up in fluid

W = FB
Object neither sinks nor rises in fluid

Weight, W
By definition, density = mass

From Archimedes’ principle :

Bouyant force = weight of fluid displace

Learning Outcomes…
1. Explain Buoyant Force
The upward force resulting from an object being
wholly or partially immersed in a fluid.

2. Relate buoyant force to the weight of the liquid displaced

BUOYANT FORCE = WEIGHT OF THE LIQUID DISPLACED
(for an object which immersed wholly or partially in fluid)

2. State Archimedes Principle

State that when object is wholly or partially immersed in a fluid,
it experiences a buoyant force equal to the weight of the fluid
displaced.
