Data, medium and signal
 Data is being transferred by a medium using
signals.

Mediums: Fiber Optic, Coaxial.. Etc.

Signals: Radio frequency, light.. Etc.

What is a medium?
 Medium: Something that allows conveying a
message through and fore from a server &
client. Examples: air & cables.

 It’s purpose: To make sure that a data or

message is being delivered

 Limitations: Speed, distance, environment

and cost
Type Length Speed Cost Advantages Disadvantages

Types of Mediums
UTP 100m 10 mbps Least Easy to install, Limited distance and
-1000 mbps Expensive widely used and susceptible to
widely available. interference

STP 100m 10 mbps Less More resistant to Limited distance

-100 mbps expensive EMI than UTP or More difficult to install
than UTP Coaxial (Thinnet) than UTP.

Coaxia 500m& 10mbps – Relatively Less susceptible to Damaged cable can

l 185m 100 mbps inexpensiv EMI than rest of bring down entire
e copper media like network. Limited
UTP bandwidth

Fiber 10km & 100mbps- Expensive Higher security, High Difficult to terminate
Optic 2km 100gbps distance,
Not susceptible to
10mbps- EMI
9.92gbps
Different between analogue and
digital signal
 Analogue signal differs from a digital signal, small
fluctuations in the signal are meaningful.

 Analogue signals use continuously variable electric

currents and voltages to reproduce data being transmitted
while  digital signals use binary data strings (0 and 1) to
reproduce data being transmitted.

 Digital signals are easier to transmit and offer less room for
errors to occur while analogue has higher room for errors to
occur.
Binary Digit
 A Binary Number is made up of only 0s and
1s.
 BIT – short for binary digit, which, in a
computer, is the smallest unit of storage.
 In the computer world "binary digit" is often
shortened to the word "bit"
 For the first 16 numbers:
Operating Frequency
 The amount of data sent can be dependent on the
operating frequency.
Example:
1µs
OF I

A 1 0 1 1 0 1 0 0

OF II 2 µs

 Speed
Scenario 2 : Fiber Optic
(multimode)
 You wanted to connect the computing devices
located in two branches of a company, 1km
apart. (Security, cost, distance, speed.
 Distance: 1km (2km and farther – Multimode)
 Speed: 100Mbps to 9.92 Gpbs (Multimode)
 Cost: Expensive
 Security: Cannot be tapped, thus it has better
security.
