Although growth in emerging markets has held up, equities have not performed much better there than in the developed world. Since the beginning of 2010, the MSCI emerging-world index and developed-world index have both fallen slightly, by 0.4% and 0.9% respectively. Retail and consumer-goods companies in emerging markets have comfortably outperformed their rich-world counterparts; but shares of rich-world energy and industrial firms have done better than those in emerging markets. And shares of rich-country IT firms have fallen less far.
