ADVANTAGE OF THIS CONFIGURATION

# Better Call Quality/Soft Handoff: As soft handoff improves the overall system performance by introducing a natural diversity, more base stations are listening to the same signal. Mobiles in 2nd carrier of a Phase 1 sites while approaching the phase 2 site configured with 2 carrier will get the soft handoff gain and hence the call clarity will be maintained. # HARD HANDOFF: As some of these sites will be in proximity of the 2 carrier Phase 1 sites, above scheme will eliminate the need for defining the hard hand-off between them. This is very helpful when PHASE 2 site is near to 3rd carrier PHASE 1 BTS. # RF optimization will be simple: This can be clearly seen when PHASE 2 site is near to 3rd carrier PHASE 1 BTS. # MAC (multiple Access Channel) scheme: Due to 2 carriers the occupancy of Access channel will be less, hence it will not be required to implement MAC soon in standalone sites which will be must for a single carrier overlapping NID sites. This configuration will reduces the occupancy on the paging & access channel. # Optimum BTS hardware utilization: This will result in optimum use of BTS hard ware, as amplifier and CMU can support 2 carrier .Also URC and UCR can support up to 3 carriers.

CONCEPT: Load sharing configuration

Load sharing feature in MOD 4.0 is exploited to achieve the 2 carrier with 1 E1 backhaul. For above figure for MOD 4.0.in ECP software database the components names are not changed for simplicity, which is why components like URC is labeled in figure as CRC,CMU as CCU & UCR as CBR. In the Load Sharing Configuration, the CRCs share support for all carriers. Only CCUs and packet pipes are dedicated to a specific CRC. CBRs and associated RF components (MCAs/TXAMPs) are shared across all CRCs. If a CRC fails, only the CCUs and PPs physically associated with that CRC are lost which translates into a loss of capacity. However, all carriers are still operational unless all active CRCs fail.

Assumptions & Limitations

When a single carrier site is converted to 2 carrier BTS,the traffic load will get equally distributed & only the type of service requested by the subscriber will vary (Voice or Data) Same is not the replacement for fully loaded 2 carrier site, If the site is getting high traffic we may require the addition of one more E1.

GUIDELINES FOR UPGRADATION

Erlang Supported per 15 DS0= 33 Erlang (blocking of 1.2%)pure voice erlangs(EXCLUDING SOFT HANDOFF & 16 channels are reserved for
supplementary channels )

Erlang Supported per 13 DS0= 26 Erlang (blocking of 1.2%)pure voice erlangs(EXCLUDING SOFT HANDOFF &16 channels are reserved for
supplementary channels ) Hence it is recommended to upgrade the E1,once the total traffic of the BTS reaches above 60-65 E,so as to avoid the Packet Pipe blocking due to 3 additional Data SCH or due to sudden burst of traffic. As the 15 & 13 DS0 Packet Pipe is a pooled resources, same will be used by voice(soft, softer & soft-softer),data calls, giving us the transient time for E1 upgrade, even if the total traffic crosses 65 E mark. Radio utilization should not be considered for upgrade here as same will be low.
