Agenda
Introduction LEED USGBC Green Buildings in India IGBC GRIHA ECBC

Need for Green Buildings

Global warming o Polar ice cap melting o Uncertainity of weather Examples: o Buildings in US contribute 38.1 percent of the nation's total carbon dioxide emissions o Buildings annually consume more than 20% of the electricity used in India

Solution: Green Buildings

Definition (IGBC) A green building is one which uses less water, optimises energy efficiency, conserves natural resources, generates less waste and provides healthier spaces for occupants, as compared to a conventional building.

Implementation
Prevention of erosion of soil Use of renewable energy Landscapes to reduce heat Reuse of waste water Reduction in use of potable water

Benefits of Green Buildings

Environment Benefits:o Improve air and water quality o Reduce waste streams o Conserve and restore natural resources Economic Benefits:o Reduce operating costs o Create and shape markets for green products o Sale price and rental rates o Anticipated tax breaks

LEED: An Introduction
Developed by US Green Building Council Internationally recognized green building certification system Provides concise framework to identify and implement practical, measurable green building design, construction, operations maintenance solutions Applicable to commercial and residential buildings

LEED Project Types

New commercial construction and major renovation projects (LEED-NC) Existing building operations (LEED-EB) Commercial interiors projects (LEED-CI) Core and shell projects (LEED-CS) Homes (LEED-H) Neighbourhood Development (LEED-ND)

LEED Levels of Certification

Certified 40+ points Silver 50+ points Gold 60+ points Platinum 80+ points

Green Buildings in India

Varieties of buildings registered for LEED Green Building Rating in India

IT Parks Offices Banks Hospitals Airport Convention centers Educational Institutions Hotels Residential

IGBC Registered Green Hospital Projects in India

Kohinoor Hospital, Mumbai

Kohinoor Hospital - Benefits Achieved

35 % Energy Savings Green Power from Wind Mills Solar hot-water generation Better Indoor Air Quality Regular CO2 monitoring Increased fresh air ventilation No sick building syndrome

Heat Reclaim System - Higher efficiency than conventional systems Day Lighting - Healing benefits for patients Patient Recovery Faster - Based on research

Benefits Experienced in LEED Rated Buildings

3 LEED Platinum Buildings monitored to validate tangible benefits Benefits far exceeding the initial estimates

Energy consumption depends on Local climate, Density of occupancy, Occupancy schedule, Orientation of the building, Internal loads

IGBC: Indian Green Building Council

IGBC is actively involved in promoting the Green Building concept in India. The council is represented by all stakeholders of construction industry The vision of the council is to usher green building revolution and India to become one of the world leaders in green buildings by 2015.

GRIHA
Acronym for Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment Rating tool to assess the performance of their building against benchmarks Minimize a buildings resource consumption, waste generation, and overall ecological impact To quantify aspects such as energy consumption, waste generation, renewable energy adoption

Challenges and Solutions

Challenges Decentralize people and groups Limited interaction between people and groups Solutions Define and quantify sustainable building practices and their benefits Separate the role of different participants

Energy Conservation Building Code (2007)

Developed by BEE with support and guidance from USAID on 28th Jan. 2007 Buildings with electrical load of 500 kW or more Specifies the energy performance requirements for all commercial buildings

Scope of ECBC
Building Envelope Interior and Exterior lightening Mechanical Systems (HVAC) Service Water Heating

Electrical Power and motors

Implementation Plan
The code would be implemented in near future The energy conservation awards scheme State and Municipal implementing agencies Design Manuals, Software and provide training Awareness programs for building owners, designers and users
