The OCR Nationals Business and ICT Level 1

Introduction!

National Award
The OCR Nationals are attractive, practicallybased qualifications intended to stimulate and interest candidates. They support achievement of Key Skills and relate to national occupational standards thereby providing an ideal progression to National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs) once individuals are in suitable employment

Overview
This course has been developed to provide you with an introduction to the skills, knowledge and understanding required to prepare for work in the business and ICT sector. They have also been designed to help you develop your personal skills in areas such as team working, career planning, communication and problem solving. You will carry out a range of tasks that have been designed to recognise your achievements in a modern, practical way that is relevant to the workplace.

Specification aims
The qualifications specifically aim to: Develop your knowledge and understanding of generic, transferable skills that are essential for further education, occupational training or employment, i.e. basic skills, team working and problem solving. Develop your knowledge and understanding of the Business and ICT sector and, where selected, a chosen specialist pathway within that sector area. Develop your knowledge, understanding and skills in contexts that are relevant to employment situations. Enable you to develop the skills necessary to participate in real situations. Encourage your progression by assisting in the development of skills, knowledge and understanding which you will need to access further education opportunities or occupational training on a full-time or parttime basis. Promote interaction between employers, centres and learners by relating teaching and assessment to real settings.

Qualification structure
OCR Nationals in Business and ICT at Level 1 are offering three separate qualifications to accommodate a range of learning styles and requirements. Qualification 1: National First Award You have to complete mandatory units 1 to 4 which equals to 1 GCSE (D-G). Qualification 2: National Award You have to complete mandatory units 1 to 5, plus three other optional units, total of 8 units which equals to 3 GCSE (D-G).

Qualification 3: National Certificate you need to achieve mandatory units 1 to 6, plus six optional units total of 12 units which equals to 4 GCSE (D-G), Foundation GNVQ.

OCR Nationals Business and ICT National Award.


National Award Units 1 to 5, plus optional units 7, 8 and 12 Mandatory Units are: Unit 1: Working as a team in business and ICT Unit 2: Investigating businesses and the impact of ICT Unit 3: Introducing practical business and ICT skills Unit 4: Investigating options for work in Business and ICT Unit 5: Communication skills in business and ICT

Chosen optional Units are: Unit 7: What is a business? Unit 8: Communication in business Unit 12: Working in retail and services

Unit 1: Working as a team in business and ICT

Assessment objectives: AO1: Outline who makes up two different teams in the business and ICT sector. AO2: Contribute to the planning of two team working activities. AO3: Outline own responsibilities as a team member in two team working activities. AO4: Make a contribution to two team working activities. AO5: Review the two team working activities and identify improvements.

Unit 2: Investigating businesses and the impact of ICT


Assessment objectives: AO1: Identify different types of business activities, giving examples. AO2: Identify the main features of the different types of ownership, matching businesses to each type of ownership. AO3: Describe the factors that affect the location of businesses, giving examples AO4: Describe how businesses use ICT. AO5: Investigate the impact of ICT on business practices.

Unit 3: Introducing practical business and ICT skills


Assessment objectives: AO1: Investigate the content and layout of standard business communications and identify common features of each. AO2: Create standard business communications from given information using appropriate software. AO3: Use electronic communication for business purposes. AO4: Investigate the content and layout of standard purchasing documents, including those used for ecommerce, identifying common features of each. AO5: Complete standard purchasing documents using appropriate software. AO6: Understand the importance of accuracy in business documents and check the accuracy of documents produced.

Unit 4: Investigating options for work in business and ICT


Assessment objectives: AO1: Find out about one employment area within the business and ICT sector. AO2: Use sources of information to find out about two job roles in the chosen employment area and identify a vacancy for each job role. AO3: Review your personal qualities, skills, achievements and relevant experience. AO4: Produce a CV AO5: Produce a personal career development plan for the chosen employment area.

UNIT 5: Communication skills in business and ICT


Assessment objectives: AO1: Describe how communication takes place in the business and ICT sector. AO2: Communicate in writing. AO3: Communicate verbally. AO4: Review your own communication skills in business and ICT settings.

UNIT 7: What is a business?


Assessment objectives: AO1: Describe the main business activities of the chosen business. AO2: Describe the main aims of the chosen business. AO3: Describe the benefits and drawbacks of the type of ownership of the chosen business. AO4: Explain the reasons for the location of the chosen business. AO5: Describe the main activities carried out by four functional areas within the chosen Business.

UNIT 8: Communication in business


Assessment objectives: AO1: Demonstrate use of the internet to search and download information. AO2: Use email for communication purposes. AO3: Participate in a business meeting. AO4: Use presentation software to produce documentation to support an oral presentation. AO5: Carry out an oral presentation using the presentation slides.

UNIT 12: Working in retail and services


Assessment objectives: AO1: Identify the different types of retail outlets in an area and describe what makes them different from one another. AO2: Describe the current location of one retail outlet and give reasons why this location was chosen. AO3: Identify the different types of displays used by two different retail outlets and describe why these have been chosen. AO4: Give examples of health and safety concerns for retail outlets, describing what measures can be taken to ensure good health and safety conditions within the Organizations AO5: Describe the risks to the security of retail outlets and how these could be reduced. AO6: Describe key features of legislation that relates to retail outlets.

How will this qualification be assessed?


All units are centre-assessed and externally moderated by OCR. There are no timetabled exams for this qualification. You will complete the units at a time given by the teacher of the chosen units. The full award and units from this qualification are graded as Pass, Merit or Distinction.
