Due to a considerable number of hits about my post, "Strategic Intervention Material Competition" which tackles some of the pointers mentioned by the judges during the time we joined the National and Regional Competition and to some emails inquiring on how to develop SIM for classroom and also for competition... let's try to discuss a little of the basic with regard to developing a SIM.

What is a SIM Strategic Intervention Materials An instructional Materials meant to re-teach the concept(s) and skill(s) Materials given to learners to help them mater a competency-based all which they were not able to develop during the regular classroom teaching (with minimal intervention/guide of teacher)

Is SIM just another name for a Module? If not, what's the difference?

Do I need SIM in my class? Based on the definition above, definitely yes! So, let's try doing our own. What are the basic parts of a SIM?

Let's start with the Guide Card. The GUIDE CARD presents the big picture. It.. ogives an overview of the lesson; opresents the skills; oengages the learners interest; and oleads the learners towards the performance of the task(s)

Next is the Activity Card The ACTIVITY CARD defines the task(s) that the learner should undertake in order to develop a skill. The task is competency-oriented and may be an individual or group work. The purpose of the task(s) is to provide enough practice for the learners so that he/she can perform the skill automatically.

Since the Activity Card is the heart of the SIM what are some pointers that we have to consider in formulating Activities for Activity Card? Embedding the Principles of Learning in the ACTIVITY CARD Begin where the learners are. Adopt the activity to the learners style.

Now, to test whether our Activities are effective in teaching the concept, the next part which is the Assessment card is also equally important.
Assessment Card The ASSESSMENT CARD helps the learner measures his/her level of mastery of the skill upon completion of the task(s). The result of the assessment identifies the knowledge/skill(s) that the learner may need to enhance or develop further.

The next part is the Reference Card The REFERENCE CARD provides additional content to the coverage in the textbook. It may also list the resources that the learner may refer to for further reading

We must also provide some enrichment activities that may extend the learningprocess,
ENRICHMENT CARD The ENRICHMENT CARD extends learning by providing additional exercises for further application of knowledge or skill (intended for past learners) It may also contain additional information to extends knowledge.

So here's the key points; Ensure alignment of activities with the tasks/objectives; Keep the activities short and simple; Provide a variety of activities to cater to the diverse learning style; and Provide a number of activities (at least three per task) so that the learner can have enough practice in developing the skill.

So what will be the topic

LEAST MASTERED SKILLS

Thank You
