CM305.66 1
OBJECTIVES

On completion of this period you will be able to

• State the use of a memory in digital system.

• List the types of memories.

CM305.66 2
Introduction

• A device that stores information in electrical ,

magnetic or optical form is known as memory.

• In digital system, memories accept and hold

binary information only.

CM305.66 3
Use of a Memory

• Memory is a storage device.

• stores digital information.

• stores programs , data , results etc.,

CM305.66 4
Types of memories

1. Semiconductor memories

2. Magnetic memories

CM305.66 6
According to principle of operation the memories are
classified into four types

• Sequentially accessed memory:

In this memory, the memory locations are accessed

in sequential fashion.

• Random Access Memory(RAM) or Read and write

memory(RWM):

The user can read / write the information into the

memory. CM305.66 7
• Read Only memory (ROM):

The user can only read the information from it.

• Content Addressable memory (CAM):

It is a special purpose RAM. It performs

association operation in addition to R/W operation.

CM305.66 8
According to Physical characteristics the
memories are classified into

• Erasable or non-Erasable Memories

Erasable Memories are in two Types

1. Location by Location erasable

2. All memory locations are simultaneously

erasable.

CM305.66 9
Volatile or Non-volatile Memories

Volatile memories: In this the stored information is

lost when the electrical power is switched off.

Non-volatile memories: In this the stored

information remains intact until changed deliberately

CM305.66 10
According to Fabrication technology the memories
are classified into

• Bipolar Memories

M O S Memories

CM305.66 11
Summary

We have discussed about

• The use of a memory

• Various types of memories
