Q.1 Why are successful projects so important to Hewlett-Packard?

Growth

results from successful projects only. Managers are more concerned about getting better results from the projects underway in the organization. For getting better cross-organizational cooperation.

Q.2 How far should an evaluation team go in trying to quantify project contributions to the firms mission or goals? What is the role of financial selection criteria in HPs project selection process?

Projects

that fulfill organization purpose, mission and vision are prioritized. Organize projects into categories to check for completeness, gaps, opportunities and compliance with strategy. An effective criteria is set for selecting projects.

HP

uses Activity based costing model instead of traditional model. ABC model includes communications relationship building and indirect labor costs. But top performing companies do not use financial model for portfolio planning. Relying on forecast numbers that are fictitious is difficult.

Q.3 Considerable attention is paid to the measures HP uses to evaluate its projects. Is the aim of carefully defining these measures to simplify the project selection process or something else?

To

select best of the best projects that suit the companys strategic goals. Moreover growth in organization depends on successful projects. Encourage out-of-the-box thinking to capture ideas about core competences and competitive advantage.

Q.4 What do the aggregate project plan and the plan of record illustrate to upper management?

Aggregate project plan Also known as in-plan. Record all funded projects. Out-plan contains projects for future consideration. Also contains reasons for delaying or not funding projects

Plan of record Used as both process and tool. List all projects underway or under consideration. Helps identifying gaps between required and actual resources.

Q.5 When should out-plan projects be reconsidered for inclusion?


Once

the in-plan projects be completed or going to be completed. The organization has sufficient funds and resources available.

Q.6 What was your impression of the impact that HPs project selection process had on the number of projects underway? How do you expect HP would score on Project Management Maturity?

Has

a positive impact on the underway projects. Project completes on time with regular update of the project. Project Management Maturity is a tool used to measure how competently the projects are managed. Of the five levels, HP would be at adaptive level. Adaptive (continuous improvement in processes, success in normal, performance keeps improving)

Q.7 How did the new project selection process handle non-numeric type projects? Risk? How did this new process alter new project proposals at HP?

Organizations

use narratives to describe each

project. Narrations like good, fair, poor etc. An Aha occurred when people found they were wrong.
