Classes of Architecture

Reference Architecture: The doctrinal basis of architectures represented by elements, products and views that are interrelational and are used to capture the information required to represent the as-is and target architectures. As-Is (Baseline) Architecture: A description of the fielded "as-is" architecture that represents the existing enterprise, the current business practices and technical infrastructure. A specification or product that has been formally reviewed and agreed upon, that thereafter serves as the basis for further development and that can be changed only through formal change control procedures or a type of procedure such as configuration management. Target Architecture: Representation of a desired future state or to be built for the enterprise within the context of the strategic direction.

What Do You Do with an EA?

Use the EA to make DECISIONS.

Analysts will use the EA to scope/produce recommendations, in support of decision makers, based upon products that represent the holistic enterprise from various integrated perspectives such that the risk is explicitly known and can be managed.

What are our real Business Drivers

Effectiveness Efficiency ROI Risk mitigation Joint forces, corporate (same as commands) NATO US (US Navy, US Army, US Air Force) Government (Federal, Provincial, Municipal)

Processes dont roll up or down

Through graphics, models, and/or narrative that depict the enterprise environment and design. An organizing mechanism for managing development, maintenance, and facilitated decision making. The Framework provides a structure for organizing resources and for describing and managing EA activities.
