Introduction
Amount of air inducted per unit time can be increased by: Increasing density, increasing speed The method of increasing the inlet air density called supercharging.
Objectives Of Supercharging.
Increase power to weight & bulk. important for aircraft, marine & automobile application. Compensate for loss of power due to high altitude. Obtain more power from an existing engine.
Supercharging Of C. I. Engines.
Increase in pressure & temp. reduces ignition delay. Better, quiter & smoother combustion. Possible to use lower air-fuel ratio, lower temp. reduces smoke. Degree of supercharging is limited by thermal & mechanical load on engine.
Supercharging Limits
Limited by knock, thermal, & mechanical loads. Depending upon engine type, cooling arrangement. S.I. engine Knock limits reach first, C.I. engine thermal & mechanical limits first.
Conclusion:
Supercharging is most suitable for C.I. engine than S.I. engine. Fuel consumption is increases due to supercharging in S.I. engine. Engine works better, quitter & smoother.
