Gummy Smile: An Esthetic Problem

The smile line or esthetic zone is determined by several factors, including:


The shape and size of your lips.

Facial muscles.
The shape and size of your teeth. Gingival tissue.

Types of Gummy Smiles

Gummy smiles, are classified according to the amount of gum tissue that shows in relation to how much tooth structure is showing when smiling.

Class I - Mild Gummy Smiles

If the amount of gum tissue showing when smiling is less


than 25% of the entire length of the teeth.

Class II - Moderate Gummy Smiles

If the amount of gums showing when smiling is between 25% and 50% of the length of the teeth.

Class III - Advanced Gummy Smiles

If the amount of gum tissue showing when smiling is between 50% and 100% of the length of the teeth.

Class IV - Severe Gummy Smile
