EXPORT PROMOTION COUNCILS AND THEIR ROLES IN EXPORT PERFORMANCE

INTRODUCTION
The Export Promotion Councils are non-profit organizations registered

under the Indian Companies Act or the Societies Registration Act, as the case may be. They are supported by financial assistance from the Government of India.
The main role of the EPCs is to project India's image abroad as a reliable

supplier of high quality goods and services.


The EPCs encourage and monitor the observance of international

standards and specifications by exporters.


The EPCs keep abreast of the trends and opportunities in international

markets for goods and services and assist their members in taking advantage of such opportunities in order to expand and diversify exports.

Handloom Export Promotion Council


It is registered under the Companies Act, 1956, was constituted in 1965 by

the Government of India as the nodal agency for export promotion efforts related to the cotton handlooms textile sector.
The HEPC provides to its members a wide range of services which inter-

alia consists: - Dissemination of trade information and intelligence - Publicity abroad for Indian handloom products - Organising business mission/buyer seller meet and participation in trade fairs abroad - Providing impetus to modernisation of handlooms for the export market - Consultancy & guidance services for handloom exporters

ENGINEERING EPC
Engineering Export Promotion Council (EEPC) was set up in

1955 under the sponsorship of Ministry of Commerce, Govt. of India, for export promotion of engineering goods, projects and services from India.
Engineering exports from India has been steadily growing

and the performance has probably exceeded all expectations ever since the birth of the Council.
As the engineering sector is extremely diversified, the

Council has set up different Product Panels with a view to ensure that all possible & potential Indian products reach out to the global markets.
EEPC aggressively peruses a number of activities &

services for its exporting community, its members & the potential overseas buyers with a two-point objective of facilitating exports of Indian engineering products & services to the global market and to provide 4/18/12 the overseas

During last five decades, EEPC has been playing a pivotal role in

increasing countrys engineering exports and as of date, engineering exports have crossed US$ 20 billion in the year 2005-06 in comparison to US$ 10 million that was achieved in the year 1956-57.
Engineering exports have been registering steady growth each year and

has registered a growth of 27.50% during 2005-06 over the previous year.
It is notable factor that SMEs contribution to total engineering exports is

about 40%. This sector is the foremost net foreign exchange earner of the country.

APEDA
The Agricultural and Processed Food

Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) was established by the Government of India under the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority Act passed by the Parliament in December, 1985.
APEDA is mandated with the

responsibility of export promotion and development of the following scheduled products: 4/18/12

ASSIGNED FUNCTIONS
Development of industries relating to the

scheduled products for export by way of providing financial assistance or otherwise for undertaking surveys and feasibility studies, participation in enquiry capital through joint ventures and other reliefs and subsidy schemes;
Registration of persons as exporters of the

scheduled products on payment of such fees as may be prescribed; scheduled products for the purpose of exports;

JEMS AND JWELLERY EPC


Set-up in 1966, the GJEPC has over the years effectively

molded the scattered efforts of individual exporters to make the gem and jewellery sector a powerful engine driving India's export-led growth.
This apex body of the gem & jewellery industry has played

a significant role in the evolution of the Indian gem and jewellery industry to its present stature.
GJEPC is continuously working towards creating a pool of

artisans and designers trained to international standards so as to consolidate the Indian jewellery industry and establish it as a prominent global player in the jewellery segment.
With strength of 6,500 members' spread all over the

country, the Council is primarily involved in introducing the Indian gem & jewellery products to the international market and promotes their exports.

undertakes direct promotional activities like organizing joint participation in international jewellery shows, sending and hosting trade delegations, and sustained image building exercises through advertisements abroad, publications and audio-visuals.

APPARELS EPC
Incorporated in1978, AEPC is the official body of apparel exporters in

India that provides invaluable assistance to Indian exporters as well as importers/international buyers who choose India as their preferred sourcing destination for garments.
For Indian exporters, AEPC is quite literally a one-stop shop for

information1 advise1 technical guidance1 workforce and market intelligence. Members have access to updated trade statistics1 potential markets1 information on international fairs and assistance in participating at these fairs.
Twice a year, AEPC showcases the best of Indias garment export

capabilities through the prestigious India International Garment Fair, playing host to over 350 exhibitors displaying the exotic, the haute, the prt, the contemporary and much more With AEPC's expertise and all the advantages that India has, it makes for a truly win-win situation Indian exporters grow stronger each year in their achievements, skills and proficiency, while international buyers get superior solutions for their garment imports.

efficiency in achieving the growth of exports garments by exploring, sustaining & expanding global markets, becoming one stop information centre providing export assistance to garment exporters and bridge the gap between the exporters and overseas buyers through dedicated efforts of employees and continual improvement of the quality management system. Pharmaceutical Export Promotion Council


The dynamic growth of Indian Pharma Industry, a knowledge based

industry, and the recommendations of four major Pharma associations made the Ministry of Commerce & Industry to realize the need for separate export promotion council. Accordingly, Pharmaceuticals Export Promotion Council (PHARMEXCIL) has been set up on 12.5.2004. With its notification No.61 dt. 16.3.2005, Director General of Foreign Trade made Pharmexcil the sole agency to issue RCMCs to all Pharma exporters.
The activities of the Council are administered by Committee of

Administration consisting of representatives from major Pharma industries in India like J B Chemicals & Pharmaceuticals Limited, Suven Life Sciences Limited, Dr. Reddys Laboratories, Aurobindo Pharma, Luipin, Ranbaxy, Novarties, Avantis, Ipca, Shasun, Sun Pharma, Zydus Cadila, Glowchem, Calyx etc., apart from Govt. officials from Central govt. and Govt. of Andhra Pradesh. Administrative support to the Council is extended by very rich experienced personnel from various fields like Govt. of India and Pharma industry.
