INTELLIGENT BUILDINGS
The field of intelligent buildings encompasses an enormous variety of technologies, across commercial, industrial, institutional and domestic buildings, including energy management systems and building controls.

INTELLIGENT STRUCTURE

An intelligent structure is a system that incorporates particular functions of sensing and actuation to perform intelligent actions in an ingenious way.

INTELLIGENT BUILDINGS
Includes controlling, monitoring and optimising building services Examples will include
lighting; heating; Security: CCTV and alarm systems; access control; audio-visual and entertainment systems; ventilation, filtration and climate control, etc

INTELLIGENT / SMART MATERIALS

Science & Technology have made amazing development, Special materials are being designed and researched those will have the ability to change shape or size simply by adding a little bit of heat, or to change from a liquid to a solid almost instantly i.e., they have one or more properties that can be dramatically altered
Eg.: viscosity, volume, conductivity etc.

Those can be controlled by three fields: Magnetic, Electric and Thermal

Intelligent Materials are defined in different ways:

Materials Function for both sensing and actuating/operating. Have multiple response with self repairing or stand-by characteristics to withstand sudden changes. It responds with change in shape when force applied externally.

USE OF INTELLIGENT MATERIALS

In structures subjected to earthquake and other environmental loads. Can be used in composite structures to monitor the building externally. Monitoring construction material condition through out the life span. Such as stress, moisture, voids cracks, etc. , via a remote sensor Self-stressing fibers used can help in problems related to beams, columns and give a practical solution. Used for structural health monitoring by using piezo transducers bonded to the structure or embedded in walls to detect local damage.

INTELLIGENT CONCRETE
Smart concrete is reinforced by carbon fibre as much as 0.2% to 0.5% of volume to increase its sense ability to strain or stress while still has good mechanical properties. It senses tiny structural flaws before they become significant The presence of the carbon fibres also controls the cracking

ADVANTAGES OF INTELLIGENT CONCRETE

The 30% rise in cost is still significantly cheaper than attaching / embedding sensors into structures. Smart concrete is stronger than conventional concrete by the use of carbon fibres. It takes greater force for smart concrete to bend. It absorbs more energy before fracture. Monitoring can be a real-time and continuous effort.
