REDUCE REUSE RECYCLE

Akhil V Bansal Abhijith Shetty

Introduction
Most creative ways to solve environmental problems minimize consumption. Modern consumer culture encourages people to define low prices as high value, but inexpensive items, such as furniture and clothing, often wear out quickly and must be replaced. By minimizing consumption of newly manufactured products, either through buying items with a longer lifespan or those that are used, resources are not consumed in manufacturing

Reduce
The most effective way to reduce waste is to not create it in the first place The waste heirarchy

Reduce
How to do it! Use light bulbs with a long life. Use a water filter instead of buying bottled water. Use pencils or re-useable pens instead of disposable pens. Rent or borrow items instead of buying them. Use email or phone calls instead of sending letters, faxes, or reports when possible.

Reduce
Consumption of natural resources to the extent possible Emission of carbon into atmosphere Developmental projects affecting environment Human activities accelerating global warming and climate changes Deforestation for developmental activities Consumption of non biodegradable materials in every day life Consumption of energy to reduce pollution and exploitation of nature

Reuse
All spent natural resources to reduce more fresh consumption All materials manufactured with trees/plants for their conservation All recycled materials to reduce the demand ALSO: Education. It is not this simple to solve our currentday environmental problems.

Reuse
Buy products that have been refurbished (they cost less, often come with warranties, and keep the product from ending up in a landfill). Never write or print on just one side of a paper. If you have paper that is used only on one side, use the other side for scratch paper, notes, or printing out pages for your household organizer notebook. Use reusable shopping bags instead of the paper of plastic the stores offer. Use rechargeable batteries.

Recycle
Recycling involves the collection of used and discarded materials processing these materials and making them into new products. It reduces the amount of waste that is thrown into the community dustbins thereby making the environment cleaner and the air more fresh to breathe. All wasted/spent natural resources to reduce their consumption All used materials with the available technologies All used materials manufactured with trees/plants to reduce deforestation

Recycle
The steps involved in the process prior to recycling include a) Collection of waste from doorsteps, commercial places, etc. b) Collection of waste from community dumps. c) Collection/picking up of waste from final disposal sites.

Recycle
Waste recycling has some significant advantages. It leads to less utilization of raw materials. reduces environmental impacts arising from waste treatment and disposal. makes the surroundings cleaner and healthier. saves on landfill space. saves money. reduces the amount of energy required to manufacture new products.

Recycle
Single Stream Recyclables Aerosol cans containing no propellant or material Aluminum: Cans and clean foil Beverage and food containers Clean glass, steel, and tin Paper: Paper wrappers Magazines Newspaper Blueprint paper All envelopes Junk mail Telephone books Paperback books

Etc.

Recycle
Other Recyclables Corrugated cardboard Plastic bottles or containers with a #1-7 recycling symbol on the bottom (rigid plastic only, not plastic film) Batteries Computers and electronic devices Empty toner cartridges Miscellaneous office equipment and furniture

Recycle
What's not recyclable? Carbon paper Wax-coated papers Plastic-coated papers Tissue or paper towels Paper or containers contaminated by food or other organic waste Plastic film Styrofoam Trash
