SYNOPSIS
Industrial Power Supply gives exposure to the basic principles of power supplies and voltage stabilizers found in industry. The main focus is on linear power supply, switching mode and automatic voltage stabilizer. This course also covers on how power suplly equipment is designed using power electronic devices and types of voltage stabilizers.

OBJECTIVES
At the end of the course, students should be able to: 1. Describe function ofthe main components and the characteristics of linear power supply. 2. Elaborate on the types of switched mode DC power supplies and the comparison between primary, secondary and resonance converters. 3. Design switching mode DC power supplies. 4. Eleborate on the characteristics of switching mode AC power supplies. 5. Explain uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) and types of switching mode AC power supplies.

SUMMARY
LINEAR POWER SUPPLY Discuss power supply cirsuits, power supply characteristics, filter circuits, types of voltage regulation cirsuits, protection circuit and feedback circuit. DC SWITCH MODE POWER SUPPLY Learn the important aspects of switching mode power supplies, types of primary and secondary power supplies, resonance converters, calculations on current and induction values. Two way power supplies and aspects of power supply design. Power supply components and switching components. AC SWITCH MODE POWER SUPPLY Learn the importance of uninterrupted power supplies and types of switch mode power supplies resonance, two way and multi stages. Exposure to AC voltage regulators and AVR.

CHAPTER 1 LINEAR POWER SUPPLY
introduction.
Explain the function of power supply components and circuits:
Transformer. Rectifier. Filter. Regulator. Load Regulation. Source / Line regulation. Output impedance. Ripple elimination.

Characteristics of a good power supply.

Filter ripple ratio.

Draw and explain voltage regulation circuits:


Transistor regulator series and parallel. IC regulators.

Limiter circuit and to increase current. Voltage doubler circuit and its disadvantages. Protection and feedback circuits. Examples of linear power supply circuit.

CHAPTER 2 DC SWITCH MODE POWER SUPPLY Introduction.


SYLLABUS

Explain the switching mode power supply; operation, design, regulation and basic circuit. Comparison with linear power supply Advantages and dis advantages. Primary and secondary power supply.

Elaborate on the types of switching mode power supply and the comparison between primary and secondary converters. Secondary converter.
Down (Buck) converter. Up (Boost) converter. Up down (Buck - Boost) converter.

Primary converter.

Forward converter. Flyback converter. Draw and explain the function of resonance converter circuits.
Full bridge. Half bridge.

For the converter, Draw and explain the function of the circuits. Draw the voltage and current waveforms. Calculate the duty cycle, minimum current, maximum current and minimum inductance values Input and output parameters. Mechanical parameter. Safety factor Efficiency Cost SCR, TRIAC, BJT, MOSFET, JFET

Draw the circuit and explain its operation. Explain the advantages of the circuit. Design specifications.

Design the swicthing mode power supply.

CHAPTER 3 AC SWITCH MODE POWER SUPPLY Introduction
Explain the characteristics of AC power supply. List the line interferences that commonly occur Explain the switching mode AC power circuit. Draw and explain uninterruptible power supply (UPS)
UPS network system components. 3 phase UPS circuits.

Resonant AC power supply


Draw and explain its operation.
Full wave circuit. Half wave circuit.

Two way AC and multiple stages power supplies.


Draw the circuit and explain its operation.

Draw and explain AC voltage Regulator


Automatic Voltage Regulator.

ASSESSMENT
Assessment of this course is as follows:

Continuous evaluation is carried out during the course of the semester and consists of the following parts:
